Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos is expected to announce his preliminary FIFA World Cup squad by 11 May 2026.
South Africa will begin their World Cup campaign against hosts Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca on 11 June.
With less than 35 days remaining before kickoff, Broos is still fine-tuning several areas of his squad.
Following a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, Bafana are yet to fully settle key positions ahead of the global showpiece.
Bafana World Cup match in less than 35 days
In defence, Broos is still searching for the ideal partner for Mbekezeli Mbokazi at centre-back. Both Ime Okon and Siyabonga Ngezana have been tested in the role, but the Belgian tactician could yet turn to experienced defender Grant Kekana for added stability and leadership.
Midfield is another area where competition remains fierce. Bathusi Aubaas could miss out on the final squad, with Siphesihle Sithole, Jayden Adams, Teboho Mokoena and Thalente Mbatha all pushing strongly for selection.
Broos also faces a major decision in the number 10 role. Relebohile Mofokeng has been tested in the creative position alongside Sipho Mbule, although the latter is unlikely to make the final cut.
Another player back in contention is veteran playmaker Themba Zwane. Popularly known as “Mshishi”, Zwane remains one of the country’s most naturally gifted attacking midfielders, but questions remain over whether age and recent form could count against him on football’s biggest stage.
While Zwane brings experience and creativity, he has struggled to consistently hit top form for both club and country in recent months.
When will Broos announce Bafana’s final World Cup squad?
According to FIFA regulations, participating nations must submit their preliminary squads by 11 May, while the final 23 to 26-man squads are due on 1 June.
Broos is expected to announce an initial squad of between 37 and 50 players as early as Monday.
With the Betway Premiership season concluding in the next two weeks, there could still be a few surprise inclusions before the final squad is confirmed.
The Bafana coach has already indicated that around 70 to 80 percent of his World Cup squad has been settled following the recent international friendlies against Panama in March.
