Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs came into the Soweto derby carrying form and confidence in the Betway Premiership, but the opening minutes showed just how careful both sides were.

It was a cagey start, with neither team willing to overcommit. Amakhosi looked slightly more dangerous early on, controlling possession and winning a couple of corners, while the Buccaneers stayed composed and patient in their build-up.

ORLANDO PIRATES START TO FIND RHYTHM

The first real moment arrived in the 18th minute when Oswin Appollis found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was a warning sign from Pirates, who were slowly growing into the game.

A few minutes later, they created their best chance of the half, only for Brandon Petersen to produce a superb double save inside the box to keep things level.

Pirates began to take control as the first half progressed, but they were dealt a blow in the 34th minute when Tshepang Moremi was forced off through injury. Patrick Maswanganyi came on, with Relebohile Mofokeng shifting to the left wing.

Maswanganyi made an immediate impact, driving the team forward and adding energy in attack. Around the 40th minute, Pirates put together a slick move, but Thalente Mbatha’s effort went over the bar.

Moments later, Kamohelo Sebelebele tried his luck with a powerful low shot, but Petersen was again equal to it, keeping Chiefs in the game with another important save.

KAIZER CHIEFS STRIKE FIRST IN SECOND HALF

The second half started evenly, with both teams struggling to create clear chances. But just after the hour mark, Chiefs found the breakthrough.

Wandile Duba made a strong run before picking out Pule Mmodi, who calmly finished at the far post to give Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Pirates responded with urgency and began to push forward in search of an equaliser. Their pressure finally paid off in the 74th minute when Deon Hotto forced a save from Petersen, and Sebelebele reacted quickest to convert the rebound.

WILL ORLANDO PIRATES REGRET MISSED CHANCES?

With momentum on their side, Pirates kept pushing in the final stages. Mofokeng and Appollis both tested Petersen, but the Chiefs goalkeeper stood firm.

Kaizer Chiefs defended with discipline, holding their shape and making sure they did not give Pirates a clear opening late on.

In the end, the derby finished 1-1, a result shaped by big saves from Petersen. The Buccaneers remain top of the league with , while Mamelodi Sundowns lurk is second spot with 58 points and a game in hand.
