Kaizer Chiefs make huge announcement

At a special event on Tuesday, Kaizer Chiefs celebrated a “historic milestone” as the club officially unveiled the newly-formed Kaizer Chiefs Ladies.

“This is about building real pathways for women in the game,” Kaizer Chiefs commented in a statement.

“We aren’t just joining the league; we are honouring the years of work by pioneers like Springs Home Sweepers and Joseph Mkhonza to ensure that every girl child knows there is a place for her at the Home of Legends.”

The ladies team will feature in the Sasol Women’s League, the second-tier South African women’s division.

Kaizer Chiefs ladies team announcement details

The Squad: 24 players “combining experience and elite youth talent”.

Home Grounds: Kaizer Chiefs Village & Kwa Thema Stadium.

Leadership: Head Coach Unathi Mabena & Assistant Justice Khunou.

Special moment

The club said that this was an especially significant step in the Kaizer Chiefs history as the official launch of Kaizer Chiefs Ladies in Daveyton marked an important moment for Amakhosi and for women’s football in South Africa.

“The establishment of the Kaizer Chiefs Ladies team represents a clear commitment from the club to invest in the women’s game, to create meaningful opportunities for players, and to contribute to the continued growth of football in the country,” the club statement continued.

“This follows a deliberate and structured journey built over several years, in collaboration with key partners in the women’s football space.”

The Kaizer Chiefs Ladies squad includes former Banyana Banyana midfielder Mamello Makhabane, along with junior internationals Zanele Kunyamane and Katlego Mohale. The squad also features players with experience in the Hollywoodbets Super League, adding depth and competitiveness to the team.

The team will be based in Johannesburg and will be led by head coach, Unathi Mabena, and supported by assistant coach, Justice Khunou, both of whom bring valuable experience and a strong understanding of the local football environment.

The journey into women’s football began through a strategic partnership with Springs Home Sweepers, where initial discussions in 2023 evolved into a formal partnership in 2025.

This allowed Kaizer Chiefs to build knowledge and capacity within the women’s football landscape. The process has now culminated in the club acquiring their Gauteng Sasol League status for the 2026 season, marking their official entry into competitive women’s football.

Chairman Kaizer Motaung said the launch reflects the club’s responsibility to the game and its future.

“This is a proud moment for Kaizer Chiefs. As a club, we understand the responsibility we carry within South African football, and this step reflects our commitment to growing the game in a meaningful way. Women’s football is an important part of the future, and we are committed to being part of that journey,” he said.

“When you build something of this nature, you must think beyond the present moment. You must consider the generations that will follow and the responsibility that comes with that. Kaizer Chiefs Ladies is part of a broader vision to ensure that the game continues to elevate, to include more people, and to stand stronger in the years ahead.”
