Here’s why Kaizer Chiefs’ season isn’t actually THAT bad

Kaizer Chiefs chase vital points against bottom side Magesi FC

For all the frustration this season, Kaizer Chiefs fans do have something solid to hold onto – the numbers don’t lie.

Amakhosi are sitting on 36 points after 20 games in the Betway Premiership, and that’s no small feat. In fact, it’s one of their best returns at this stage in the last 10 seasons.

The latest boost came with a confident 2-0 win over Magesi FC, sealing back-to-back victories just when it looked like the wheels might be coming off after three straight losses.

Numbers that matter

Here’s the key stat: Kaizer Chiefs have only done better once after 20 matches in the last decade – that unforgettable 2019/20 campaign where they racked up 45 points and looked nailed-on for the title.

We all know how that ended.

The Covid-19 pandemic hit, momentum disappeared, and Mamelodi Sundowns snatched the crown on the final day.

But fast forward to now, and this current side is ahead of the curve. The 10-season average sits at 31 points – Chiefs are comfortably above that.

Kaizer Chiefs’ points total after 20 games in last 10 seasons

2016/17: 35

2017/18: 31

2018/19: 28

2019/20: 45

2020/21: 24

2021/22: 35

2022/23: 28

2023/24: 29

2024/25: 28

2025/26: 36

Not perfect, but promising

Let’s be honest – it hasn’t been smooth sailing.

Inconsistency has been the story of the season. One week they look like contenders, the next they’re off the pace.

But this is where things get interesting: despite the ups and downs, they’re still in a strong position to push for a top-three finish and a return to continental football via the CAF Confederation Cup.

That’s progress. Real progress.

What’s next?

Up next is a trip to struggling Orbit College on Saturday, 6 April (15:00) – exactly the kind of fixture Kaizer Chiefs need to win if they’re serious about finishing strong.

Drop points there, and the doubters will be back. Take all three, and suddenly the momentum starts to feel real.

The bottom line

Kaizer Chiefs aren’t title favourites – not yet. But they’re no longer drifting either.

For a club that’s spent years searching for direction, this season might just be the turning point.
