Kaizer Chiefs condemn protests, claim ‘glory days will return’
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kaizer Chiefs have strongly condemned threats of violence following a small protest staged by supporters at the club’s training headquarters over the weekend.

The Soweto giants issued a statement reaffirming their appreciation for the Amakhosi Faithful, acknowledging that recent on-field performances have frustrated some supporters.

“As Kaizer Chiefs, we value and respect our supporters deeply and recognise their passion for the club over the last 56 years,” the club said.

Protest at the Village

A small group of supporters gathered at the Village on Saturday, led by Diakanya Ronald Makgato, to voice their concerns about the team’s performances.

While Kaizer Chiefs said they respect the right of fans to express their views, the club strongly condemned what it described as ultimatums and threats of violence made after the protest during various interviews.

“The ultimatums and threats of violence directed at the club… are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the statement said.

Concerns over misinformation

The club also raised concerns about what it called false claims allegedly made after the protest that were not included in the document handed to club representatives.

According to Kaizer Chiefs, such claims risk creating division among supporters.

The club urged fans to engage constructively and called on media organisations to verify information before publishing reports that could spread misinformation or promote violence in football.

Support structures defended

The statement also condemned verbal attacks aimed at supporters who belong to organised Kaizer Chiefs fan branches, describing these structures as disciplined supporters recognised by the club.

Insults or threats directed at branch members, the club said, would not be tolerated.

Club promises to improve results

Despite the tensions, Kaizer Chiefs emphasised that supporters remain a vital part of the club’s identity and history.

“The solidarity between club and fanbase has seen us through times of unbridled success as well as trying tribulations,” the statement said.

The club added that it remains focused on improving performances on the pitch and urged supporters to continue backing the team in a positive and respectful manner.

“These tough times too shall pass, and the days of glory will return,” the club said.

Current situation

Kaizer Chiefs are currently in sixth place in the Betway Premiership standings with 30 points after 18 matches.

They trail log leaders and bitter rivals Orlando Pirates by 17 points.

Amakhosi do, however, have two matches in hand over all five sides above them in the standings.

However, Kaizer Chiefs have only won eight of their 18 matches to date, suggesting they may well not close the gap significantly despite having player fewer fixtures.

Kaizer Chiefs will next be in league action in a home fixture at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 15 April against fourth-placed Durban City.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
