Kaizer Chiefs have 12 days to lick their wounds

Kaizer Chiefs suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Richards Bay FC in their first-ever visit to Richards Bay, as the Betway Premiership clash unfolded at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Tuesday, 3 March.

Thulani Gumede netted the decisive goal with just over 20 minutes remaining, condemning Amakhosi to defeat against the Natal Rich Boyz.

Despite the setback, Kaizer Chiefs remain fifth on the league table with 30 points from 18 matches, but are now 11 points behind bitter rivals Orlando Pirates and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who jointly lead the way.

Bright Start, No Reward

With a point to prove, Amakhosi began on the front foot, dominating the opening exchanges and forcing a series of early corners.

The Richards Bay defence was kept busy blocking attempts from Lebohang Maboe and Asanele Velebayi.

However, the hosts gradually settled into the contest, gaining control in midfield.

While they managed a few long-range efforts, Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma was rarely troubled.

The first half developed into a physical midfield battle, reflected in the 17 free-ficks awarded before the break.

Kaizer Chiefs regained some control through Maboe and Sibongiseni Mthethwa, who impressed on his return from injury.

Late first-half headers from Aden McCarthy and Gaston Sirino failed to hit the target, while Bvuma denied Moses Mthembu to ensure the teams went into half-time level at 0-0.

Second-Half Setback

Kaizer Chiefs struggled to assert themselves after the restart as Richards Bay applied sustained pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 69th minute following a defensive lapse.

A long ball forward was flicked on, and after Bradley Cross slipped, Sanele Barns broke free down the right channel before squaring for Gumede.

The forward took a touch to evade Mthethwa and calmly slotted past Bvuma.

Despite pushing for an equaliser, Kaizer Chiefs failed to register a single shot on target in the second half.

Amakhosi will look to end a three-match league losing streak when they host fourth-placed Durban City on Sunday, 15 March as they aim to consolidate their position in the top half of the table.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
