Tso Vilakazi: Raise Concerns Over Controversial Sundowns Goal

Posted on August 13, 2023

In a gripping encounter between Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 cup on Saturday, soccer analyst Tso Vilakazi has voiced his opinions on the match’s most contentious moment that allowed Sundowns to secure a 1-0 victory. The clash ended in controversy and left fans divided over the legitimacy of the decisive goal.

During the first half of the game, Moroka Swallows held on to a 0-0 against the formidable Sundowns. For many, this was seen as a noteworthy achievement, as Sundowns are known for their attacking prowess. However, as the match progressed, the tides turned with a moment that stole the spotlight.

Vilakazi, a respected figure in soccer analysis, expressed his disappointment at Moroka Swallows’ inability to capitalize on their set pieces. These opportunities are often important in changing the course of a game, especially when you have a man down, and their failure to convert could be seen as a missed chance to gain an upper hand.

The controversy stemmed from a goal scored by Themba Zwane, which Vilakazi firmly believes was offside. He labeled the incident as “daylight robbery,” indicating his conviction that the goal should not have stood. The absence of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology in South African matches is a matter that Vilakazi passionately addressed. He stressed the necessity of implementing VAR to ensure fair play and accurate refereeing decisions.

Vilakazi recons that the game would have taken a different turn if the score remained 0-0 during regulation time, leading to extra time. He went so far as to suggest that Swallows would have emerged victorious had the game extended beyond the 90 minutes.

Steve Komphela, Moroka Swallows’ coach, displayed his deep understanding of Sundowns’ tactics, likely due to his past association with the team. Unfortunately, the match took an unfavorable turn for Swallows when one of their player Andile Jali received a red card. This numerical disadvantage undoubtedly affected Swallows’ gameplay and made their defense even more impressive.

Despite the struggles faced by Rhulani’s team in the first half, they managed to secure a 1-0 win against the resilient Swallows.
