Riveiro reveals what sparked his fallout with Saleng at Pirates
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was among the millions of supporters celebrating the Buccaneers’ emphatic 3-0 victory over rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday evening.

Riveiro, who coached Pirates between 2022 and 2025, enjoyed a highly successful spell with the Soweto giants, winning five major trophies.

He remains a firm favourite among the Bucs faithful, having laid the foundation for the club’s recent dominance when he lifted both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup in his debut season.

Notably, the Spanish tactician also secured five consecutive Soweto Derby victories during his tenure, a remarkable record that further cemented his legacy at the club.

Although he left Pirates 10 months ago to join Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, Riveiro showed he still holds the club close to his heart.

Shortly after the final whistle, the 50-year-old took to Instagram to celebrate the win, posting a picture of himself doing the iconic Pirates pose with his arms crossed.

Jose Riveiro celebrates Pirates derby win

He was not the only familiar face rejoicing. Former Pirates players including Happy Jele, Michael Morton and Lehlohonolo Majoro were spotted celebrating at the FNB Stadium.

Even political figures joined in the festivities, with Julius Malema and Helen Zille sharing posts celebrating the Buccaneers’ dominant display.

While Pirates’ commanding performance was the main story, much of the post-match conversation centred on Riveiro, the former coach who still proudly supports the club that helped elevate his coaching career.

The Spaniard lost his last derby 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup and seeing his former side avenge that loss might have given Riveiro the closure.

Will Jose ever return to Pirates?
