Al Ahly Ordered To Pay Riveiro Millions

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have been ordered to pay former head coach Jose Riveiro a total of $588 000 (R9.3 million) in compensation after sacking him after just seven matches.

Riveiro had been in charge of the CAF Champions league record winners during the FIFA Club World Cup, and just four more matches, before the club’s management pulled the plug.

Even though the club stated that both parties had “mutually agreed” to part ways, the former Orlando Pirates coach took the matter to FIFA, who now ruled in his favor and ordered the Egyptian side to pay compensation.

However, Al Ahly have stated they will appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, once they have studied the official ruling.

The club’s statement read:

“Dr. Abdullah Shehata, legal advisor to the football sector, said that the club will file an appeal before the International Sports Court (CAS) against the judgment issued by the International Football Federation Players’ Status Chamber (FIFA) in favor of the Spanish, José Ribeiro, former technical director of the first football team, “compensation for a total of $588 thousand, including the penalty clause stipulated in the 3-month contract”.

“He added that this step will be completed after a maximum of 3 weeks, after the club receives the reasons for the decision issued in favor of the Spanish coach, pointing out that the judgment is not final, and there are other degrees of litigation, and the appeal will be made in accordance with the procedures followed in this regard.”

Riveiro, who has since joined Swedish giants AIK, was in charge of seven games, winning one, drawing four and losing twice.
