Former Kaizer Chiefs player gets 12-year jail sentence

Kaizer Chiefs supporters may remember Brian Abbas Amidu arriving at Naturena in the 2012/13 season.

Amidui, together with the former Dynamos star, Reuben Mhlanga, were arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in October 2025.

The duo has since been charged in Kwekwe for possession of cannabis (dagga) weighing 750kg with an estimated street value of R1.2 million ($75,000).

PRISON SENTENCES

Amudi, who turned out for Black Leopards after Kaizer Chiefs, learned his fate in court on Tuesday, 24 February. The report was confirmed by ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

“Abbas Amidu” Matsika and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga, appeared for sentencing on February 24, 2026. Both were handed 12-year jail terms,” Nyathi said.

“The ZRP applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in the fight against crime,” Nyathi stated, reiterating that “crime does not pay.”

During the legal proceedings, Amidu was identified in court as Tumai “Abbas Amidu” Matsika, with his age listed as 29, though football databases record his birth year as 1990, making him 35 at the time of sentencing.

Amudi became a Khosi in 2012 after playing his football for Zimbabwe’s Black Mambas, where he scored 12 goals.

He later moved to Limpopo to join Thohoyandou giants Black Leopards in 2015 after fitness challenges denied him a Kaizer Chiefs debut. At Leopards, he showed his quality, scoring four goals in over 20 matches.

His talent created several opportunities around the world. He played for El Entag El Harby in Egypt, Arar FC in Saudi Arabia, and a period playing in the United Arab Emirates.
