Sundowns coach reveals his ideal Chiefs man of the match award

Posted on August 9, 2023

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has had a rather interesting take on the DStv Premiership clash against Kaizer Chiefs in terms of the Man of the Match award. As he felt that a Chiefs player deserved more than his on form star Thapelo Maseko who initially got the award. This comes after Sundowns defeated Amakhosi by 2-1 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. This meant that Sundowns have kept their impressive victorious run to two wins in a row with the same scoreline. The opening league encounter was against Sekhukhune United and then they had to turn their focus to the Soweto giants.

Having a star-studded squad at Chloorkop has helped the technical team to adjust to different challenges within the league. Which has been able to assist Downs to conquer the Premier Soccer League (PSL) each season. When Mokwena analyzed the Chiefs game, he felt that Brandon Peterson pulled off an incredible performance which deserved a Man of the Match award. As he had a number of superb saves which stopped the Brazilians from embarrassing Amakhosi in front of a sold out crowd. It was difficult for Chiefs to play their normal game, hence Downs were dictating the matters on the pitch.

Although Peterson has came under fire from the fans for his rather costly goalkeeping techniques, but Mokwena has congratulated him for his amazing work ethic. The unfortunate thing is that the fans called the former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper out for his lack of consistent performance. As they felt that if he didn’t miss judge Downs players when they were taking shots, then he would have saved them from a disappointing defeat.
