Former Kaizer Chiefs star Khanye reveals Pirates’ biggest problem

Posted on February 20, 2026

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has revealed what he believes was Orlando Pirates’ downfall against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers hosted Sundowns at the FNB Stadium this week in a top-of-the-table clash.

Pirates went into the fixture with six point lead atop the log standings. They were unfortunately brought back down to earth by the Tshwane giants. And now, Khanye has opened up on the result.

Former Kaizer Chiefs star reveals major issue at Pirates

According to former Kaizer Chiefs wizard Junior Khanye, it was not a case of tactics gone wrong for Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The former midfielder believes the Buccaneers are finally feeling the loss of star defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Mbokazi left the club at the end of last year after sealing a blockbuster move to MLS side Chicago Fire.

Now, according to the former Kaizer Chiefs player, the defensive partnership of Lebone Seema and Nkosinathi Sibisi has far too many weaknesses that were exposed by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Khanye on Bucs’ defensive frailties

“Seema’s main job is to defend and not to play. He was tested in today’s game. For Orlando Pirates I think losing Mbokazi costed them and I understand why he had to leave. It’s for his career,” – the former Kaizer Chiefs ace told Idiski TV as quoted by AfrikFoot.

“We are happy for him and if the boy is doing well, South Africa is benefitting. But I don’t think there was a link between Sibisi and Seema at centre-back.”

Next up for Orlando Pirates is a key clash against Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup before another crucial league game against rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Abdeslam Ouaddou will hope to have his defensive-line sorted out before facing the Glamour Boys at a sold-out FNB Stadium next weekend.
