Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye feels Orlando Pirates are missing Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
This comes after the Soweto giants were defeated 2-1 by Mamelodi Sundowns midweek in a league clash at the FNB Stadium.
The talented defender left the Buccaneers in December to join MLS side Chicago Fire. During his short time at Pirates, Mbokazi established himself as the country’s top defender, helping the Sea Robbers to two trophies.
Although the Buccaneers have kept five consecutive clean sheets since he left, against Sundowns, they conceded twice which was their first real test without the 20-year-old.
Khanye felt Piates missed Mbokazi against Sundowns.
“I think losing Mbokazi hurt Pirates. It might be the difference between Pirates and Sundowns this year. They needed that boy,” he said on iDiski TV.
“I understand he needs to make a move for his career and we are happy that he left. If the boy is doing well, South Africa is benefitting but you lose quality.”
Mbokazi left Pirates too soon, says Khanye
The former Chiefs star also praised Mamelodi Sundowns defender Khuliso Mudau for keeping Pirates attackers quiet during the 2-1 victory on Wednesday.
“I want to compliment this guy, Muda,u for keeping Relebohile Mofokeng very quiet. Rele had to drop deep and make space for Hotto, but Mudau went with him. Rele is very dangerous, one of the best talents South Africa has ever produced, but I must speak the truth, Mudau is the best right back in South Africa,” Khanye said.
Since Mbokazi joined Pirates, the Buccaneers won once and drew three times against Mamelodi Sundowns.
