New star shows why Sundowns paid R58 million
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

New Mamelodi Sundowns star Brayan Leon has scored six goals in his first seven games for Kabo Yellow, quickly proving why the club invested a reported R58 million in him.

The Colombian striker arrived in South Africa with significant expectations after the world-renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano broke the news.

“After fullback Juan Arizala was sold to Udinese as revealed last week, Independiente Medellin is preparing one more sale,” the Italian reporter said on X.

“Brayan Leon leaves the club to join Mamelodi Sundowns for $3.5m [R58 million] package plus sell-on clause,” Romano added.

BRAYAN LEON MAKES INSTANT IMPACT

On the pitch, he is already delivering. Leon struck twice in Sundowns’ 2-1 win over Orlando Pirates, scoring a composed half-volley before adding a sharp sliding finish just four minutes later.

The brace took his tally to four league goals in three appearances, along with two in the CAF Champions League.

PRAISE FROM FORMER MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STRIKER

Former Sundowns striker Kenny Niemach praised Leon’s intelligence and positioning. “The moment you release the ball early, you’re providing the attacking player with an opportunity to score,’ Niemach told KickOff.

“It was encouraging to observe deliveries arriving early in the penalty area, which allows a striker to better anticipate the play.

“The crosses originating from midfield last night were of excellent quality. Leon does not operate as a typical dribbler like Lucas Ribeiro.

The former Sundowns number nine said the new jersey number 12 prefers to engage in one-two passes, positioning himself in dangerous areas.

Niemach said Leon enjoys having limited touches of the ball and demonstrates considerable intelligence on the field.

CAREER BEFORE MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Born on 19 October 2000, Leon began his professional journey at Deportivo Pereira, breaking through in 2021. He made a name for himself in the 2022 Torneo Finalizacion, scoring eight goals in 15 matches as Pereira lifted the title.

His performances earned a move to Atlético Junior in early 2023, but his stay was brief. By mid-2023, León had joined Independiente Medellín, contributing goals both in the domestic league and the Copa Sudamericana.

In 2025 alone, he tallied an impressive 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions, cementing his reputation as a potent attacking threat.
