FIVE Orlando Pirates players who have booked themselves a World Cup spot

Orlando Pirates could open a six point gap over Sundowns

Nine Orlando Pirates players were selected by Hugo Broos for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations which is a strong statement of the club’s growing influence in the national setup.

While only a handful were regular starters, the tournament proved invaluable for several Buccaneers who were experiencing AFCON football for the first time.

The likes of Thalente Mbatha, Relebohile Mofokeng, Tshepang Moremi and Sipho Mbule gained crucial international exposure that could shape their futures.

Although Bafana Bafana fell short of going deeper into the competition, the experience appears to have strengthened the Pirates contingent. Back at club level, their hunger is evident as they chase a first league title in 14 years. If their form continues, several could find themselves on the plane to the FIFA World Cup in June, though much can still change between now and then.

Here are five Orlando Pirates players who look well placed to feature at the World Cup:

Oswin Appollis

The 24-year-old winger started the season in electric form and carried that momentum into AFCON. Though he has struggled to replicate that same spark since returning, Pirates’ strong run of results could help him rediscover his rhythm.

When confident and direct, Appollis offers pace and unpredictability, qualities Broos values in wide areas.

Relebohile Mofokeng

Mofokeng continues to justify his reputation as one of South Africa’s brightest talents. His AFCON inclusion raised eyebrows in some quarters, but his recent club performances have silenced doubters.

Growing in maturity and influence with every match, the teenager looks increasingly comfortable on the big stage. If he maintains this upward trajectory and stays fit, it would be a surprise not to see him representing Bafana at the World Cup.

Pirates players have been dominating Bafana squads

Thalente Mbatha

Mbatha’s AFCON minutes were limited, but he made a meaningful cameo during the World Cup qualification campaign. At club level, his energetic displays and ball-winning ability have strengthened his case for regular national team inclusion.

The next challenge will be cementing a starting berth in Broos’ midfield, a task that will require consistency in the months ahead.

Evidence Makgopa

Makgopa remains a trusted figure under Broos. The tall forward has delivered at two AFCON tournaments and often rises to the occasion in national colours.

With strikers such as Iqraam Rayners, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Khanyisa Mabasa struggling for consistency, Makgopa could be the natural support option to first-choice striker Lyle Foster at the World Cup. His work rate and aerial presence make him a valuable tactical asset.

Sipho Chaine

Of the Pirates contingent, Chaine appears the most secure in his place. The goalkeeper is arguably among the best in the country right now and continues to impress with his shot-stopping and composure.

While he remains second choice behind captain Ronwen Williams, Chaine is expected to feature in preparatory matches leading up to the World Cup and would provide reliable cover should he be called upon on the global stage.

With Pirates players playing such a prominent role in the national setup, the coming months could prove defining, both in their pursuit of domestic glory and on the road to the World Cup.
