Stellies Knock Chiefs Out – iDiski Times

Posted on February 5, 2026

Stellenbosch FC caused the first minor upset of the Nedbank Cup as they knocked out defending champions Kaizer Chiefs out in the Round of 32.

Defending champions Chiefs paid a visit in the mother city with hopes of defending their trophy, the game delayed with 30 minutes due to supporters that were still coming to the sold out DHL Stadium.

Both sides had some key players missing for the fixture, including Tshegofatso Mabasa for Stellenbosch and Asanele Velebayi for Chiefs.

Stellies were the first ones to have a half-chance inside five minutes when Chumani Butsaka’s header went over the crossbar, not troubling Brandon Petersen. In the sixth minute Chiefs had a corner-kick taken by Gaston Sirino finding Flavio Silva who’s header went wide.

Stellies were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute after Da Silva fouled Thabo Moloisane inside the box, and Ibraheem Jabaar stepped up to hand Stellenbosch a 1-0 lead.

The Cape Winelands side had a huge chance to make it 2-0 in the 13th minute but Butsaka’s shot went wide. Moloisane could not recover from the injury and he was replaced by Henri Stanic.

It was an action-packed half and Mduduzi Shabalala was set up by Da Silva with a sublime pass, but Sage Stephens made a huge save keeping the score 1-0 to Stellies.

But Stellies did double the lead, with Titus firing home in the 22nd minute with a long range shot that beat Petersen hands down.

In the 34th minute, Chiefs had a huge opportunity once again Mdu Shabalala set up by da Silva but Stephens made a brilliant save. Immidietly after that Shabalala had another opportunity one on one but Stanic made a brilliant tackle which ended as a corner kick.

Chiefs pushed hard before half-time, spurning a few chances but Stellies went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

The second half kicked off with Chiefs piling on the pressure, as substitute Glody Lilepo took a first time shot but was denied by the crossbar.

But immediately after that Amakhosi were awarded a contentious penalty for a handball by Mosa Lebusa. Da Silva stepped up and converted, game on 2-1 with 10 minutes into the second half.

Langelihle Phili just minutes after coming nearly restored Stellies two-goal cushion, but he was denied by Petersen with a brilliant save.

The final minutes saw Chiefs push for the equaliser, but Stellies defence stood strong.
