Neo Maema who captained Bafana Bafana at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa has confirmed they have yet to receive payment for their duties from the South African Football Association (SAFA).
Maema, 30, was the leader of the squad that travelled to Uganda, mainly comprised of free agents and were moments away from an historic knockout stage qualification before conceding two late goals against the hosts to draw 3-3 and suffer a heartbreaking elimination.
However, the squad were one of the entertaining forces of the competition and several players landed contracts shortly after, but that was as good as it got for the squad.
“Yeah, no, they haven’t paid. And from me being the captain, I can testify that they haven’t paid,” Meama said on Andile Ncube’s Sports Night Amplified show on Metro FM.
“That’s the situation we’re in now, they have been promising us and they have not delivered, they got the money from CAF in October and said they will pay us in December – the agreement that we will have money in December around Christmas.”
Maema has since gone on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns to Simba SC in Tanzania where he’s now working under former Stellebosch head coach, Steve Barker.
