Kaizer Chiefs lack material to win the Betway Premiership, says Amakhosi ex-players

Posted on February 1, 2026

Former Kaizer Chiefs players Thabiso Malatsi and Junior Khanye have ruled out Amakhosi’s chances of winning the Betway Premiership.

The Glamour Boys have improved this season after failing to finish in the top 8 in the previous two campaigns. This season, Chiefs are in the hunt for the league title and are only two points behind rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Malatsi, who played for Amakhosi in the early 2000s, feels the Buccaneers and Masandawana are the real contenders.

Chiefs won’t win the Betway Premiership, says Malatsi

“To be honest, I don’t see them competing with Sundowns and Pirates. Sundowns have quality and depth; even Pirates this season have signed well. You saw they had nine players at Bafana Bafana, which showed they signed quality,” Malatsi told Soccer Laduma.

“For this season, with due respect, I don’t see Chiefs competing [for the title]. Chiefs still need to buy quality; not that I judge their players, but there are some players you can see are not the material for Chiefs.”

Malatsi said Chiefs lacked the players or quality to fight for the Betway Premiership.

“There is material for Chiefs. I can’t mention names, but some players don’t even deserve [to play for Chiefs]. Chiefs are still far from Sundowns and Pirates. They have to fix their structure; there is a lot of work they still need to do,” Malatsi added.

Another former Amakhosi star, Junior Khanye, dismissed Chiefs’ title charge.

“Mina, I can’t count Kaizer Chiefs as title contenders. There’s still a lot of work to be done. I always say the way you win determines your future,” he added.

“I still believe Sundowns will win the league because of their experience, not because they have the best team this season. Pirates are the best team, but they (Chiefs) lack the experience to win the Betway Premiership.

“Chiefs will probably finish in the top five this season as they have already accumulated points.”
