Sundowns reward fan-favourite for his patience

Posted on January 28, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a major decision over the future of one of their beloved players.

Coming through the academy setup at Chloorkop is extremely challenging.

This is because the Brazilians have a massive purse which they tap into to sign top quality foreign and local talent.

But every once in awhile, the club produces a player they’re proud to call ‘their own’.

Sundowns take big Mkhulise decision

One such player is midfield maestro Sphelele Mkhulise. The 29-year-old midfielder graduated from the club’s academy a whole decade ago.

And while Mkhulise has struggled to really knuckle down a consistent starting position at the club over the years, he has always been a true professional for the club.

Mkhulise has made 178 appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns’ senior team. He has nine goals and five assists to his name.

For majority of his career, he’s had to compete for a position with some incredible foreign talent.

And thing’s have actually not gone his way most of the time however, he kept on producing his best performances whenever called upon.

And now, the club have rewarded him with a new contract at the club.

Mkhulise signs new contract at Chloorkop

Mamelodi Sundowns FC took to social media to confirm Mkhulise’s new contract. This came just hours before the club faced Sekhukhune United on Tuesday evening.

Mkhulise was then named in Miguel Cardoso’s starting eleven to face the Polokwane outfit at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. It was just his third start of the season.
