Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs received a timely boost in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign after a crucial weekend of Group D action swung in their favour.
Amakhosi claimed a vital 1-0 win away to Zambian giants ZESCO United in Ndola. A few hours later, group rivals Al-Masry and Zamalek cancel each other out in a goalless draw in Cairo.
CAF CONFEDERATION CUP GROUP D SWINGS OPEN
Following the hard-fought grind in Zambia, the added bonus was the Egyptian heavyweights dropping points, reigniting belief in Kaizer Chiefs’ quarterfinal push.
The Soweto giants had endured a tricky start to their group-stage run. They opened with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Al-Masry before settling for a 1-1 draw at home against Zamalek. That left little room for error, putting extra pressure on their trip to Ndola, and they delivered.
With the latest results, Kaizer Chiefs now find themselves just three points behind group leaders Al-Masry, while Zamalek sit only a point above them in second place.
KAIZER CHIEFS VS ZESCO UNITED IN DURBAN
Attention now turns to the return fixture against ZESCO United, scheduled for Sunday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
This match presents another massive opportunity to collect points and reshape Group D. If Kaizer Chiefs can complete the double over ZESCO, they’ll put themselves in a powerful position heading into the decisive final rounds.
With Al-Masry and Zamalek still to face each other again, dropped points elsewhere could further open the door.
Meanwhile, Amakhosi have a Betway Premiership trip. They visit Marumo Gallants on Wednesday, 28 January at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium at 19:30.
