Updated Betway Premiership log after Chiefs and Sundowns win

Posted on January 20, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns both secured wins this week, putting added pressure on Orlando Pirates.

The Buccaneers had been atop the Betway Premiership during the AFCON break, but Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Magesi FC propelled them to the top of the table on Monday.

On Tuesday, Chiefs narrowly defeated Golden Arrows 1-0 at the FNB Stadium, with Aden McCarthy scoring the only goal in the 39th minute to earn his team three points and move them up to third place.

As Chiefs shift their focus to the CAF Confederation Cup, they will be facing Zambian side Zesco United.

Chiefs and Sundowns’ victories are concerning for the Pirates

Although the Buccaneers have two games in hand over Sundowns, anything less than a win against Sekhukhune United on Saturday will only increase the pressure on them.

They are looking to restore their two-point lead over Sundowns in this match. Chiefs are just one point behind, and any mistakes could thrust them back into contention for the title.

Sekhukhune United also has title ambitions, and a win over the Buccaneers could boost their confidence and reignite their fight for the league.

The victories by Sundowns and Chiefs have made the Pirates versus Sekhukhune match crucial, especially considering the potential changes to the standings this Saturday evening.

The Buccaneers have won nine out of their last ten league matches and have not lost since August. It remains to be seen if they will continue their winning streak.

Can Pirates beat Sekhukhune or will it be same old story?
