Sundowns Reclaim Top Spot As Leon Scores On Dream Debut

Posted on January 20, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to the summit of the Betway Premiership after overcoming Orbit College, with debutant Brayan Leon marking his first appearance with a goal.

The other goal was scored by Arthur Sales, who opened the scoring early in the first half.

Miguel Cardoso, who has been linked with exit for some time in the last few weeks, opted to start several players who are not regular starters.

The lineup included Lebo Mothiba, Siphephele Mkhulise, Kegan Johannes and Kutlwano Letlhaku, with Thato Sibiya handed his first-team debut.

The hosts began on the front foot, dominating possession and pushing forward in search of an early breakthrough. Jayden Adams came close to opening the scoring, but his volley flashed wide of the far post.

On the other hand, Orbit were struggling to make forward movements as Sundowns continued to build patiently from the back, seeking an opener.

In the 19th minute, play was halted after one of the stadium floodlights failed, with officials deeming the lighting insufficient to continue. Play resumed after a few minutes.

Sundowns took the lead in the 21st minute when Arthur Sales pressed high, blocked the goalkeeper’s pass and finished with an overhead kick to find the back of the net.

Masandawana picked up where they left off after the break, continuing to dominate possession and create scoring opportunities.

The Brazilians tightened their grip on the game after introducing more experienced players such as Themba Zwane, Nuno Santos and Marcelo Allende.

Sundowns’ new signing Brayan Leon then opened his account for the club, heading in a cross from fellow debutant Thato Sibiya.

Orbit showed flashes of attacking intent, as Surprise Ralani and Ayanda Lukhele injected energy into their forward play. Their attacks weren’t enough to bounce back.

The Tshwane giants have accumulated 29 points in 14 league matches this season.
