Pirates and Sundowns signings compared

The January transfer window has added another layer to Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns’ Betway Premiership title race.

Benedict Vilakazi, formerly a clutch player for both clubs between a stint in Europe, has weighed in on who is winning the off-field battle so far.

A BATTLE IN THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

With Orlando Pirates sitting top of the table and Mamelodi Sundowns right behind them, both clubs have moved to strengthen. But according to Vilakazi, the gap between the two sets of signings is starting to show.

The Soweto giants have brought in Daniel Msendami and Mpho Chabatsane from Marumo Gallants, while also adding Stellenbosch FC forward Andre de Jong to the mix. For Vilakazi, those moves look calculated and purposeful.

“I’m not entirely sure what Sundowns’ plans are with their new signings,” admits Vilakazi, speaking to KickOff. “Orlando Pirates have made some smart signings.

“The signing of Msendami seems aimed at providing healthy competition among the current wingers at the club. Pirates appear committed to pushing for the league title this season.

“As far as winning the league is concerned, Pirates seem to be in a strong position, with around 99% confidence.”

Sundowns, meanwhile, have pulled off one of the biggest moves of the window by signing fan favourite Monnapule Saleng from the Buccaneers, Brayan Leon from Colombia, while also adding TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane. But Vilakazi is not convinced the pieces fit.

“As for Sundowns, while they added Ndamane, they already have players like [Malibongwe] Khoza, [Mosa] Lebusa, [Grant] Kekana, [Mothobi] Mvala, and [Kegan] Johannes, which means they have multiple options in that central area. It seems unnecessary to add Ndamane.

“I appreciate Saleng because he has the ability to change a game quickly, creating opportunities out of nothing. However, I am curious about which position he will occupy, considering that their only established left-winger is [Tashreeq] Matthews.”

Vilakazi also questioned how Saleng fits into Miguel Cardoso’s system, especially given Sundowns’ recent tactical trends.

“Orlando Pirates have balanced their team well, but Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach [Miguel Cardoso] doesn’t seem to favour using wingers regularly.

“With [Kobamelo] Kodisang and [Thapelo] Maseko having left the team, and [Siyabonga] Mabena’s role still uncertain, it raises questions about Saleng’s exact position.

“Since he is a typical winger, it’s unclear how he will fit into Cardoso’s system,” added the former Orlando Pirates skipper.
