Petersen On Defending Nedbank & Stellies Tie

Posted on January 16, 2026

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen says the team is determined to mount a strong defence of their Nedbank Cup title this season and has spoken about being drawn against Stellenbosch.

Amakhosi won the competition last season, beating bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

It marked their first trophy in a decade, having last lifted silverware in 2015 when they won the ABSA Premiership title under Stuart Baxter.

Petersen says the club’s main objective is to keep the trophy in Naturena. Amakhosi will face Stellenbosch in the Round of 32 following a draw conducted on Thursday evening.

He feels that matches between Chiefs and Stellenbosch in cup competitions have grown into thrilling encounters, attracting many football fans, particularly when staged in Cape Town.

“This is the third time I’ve [personally] drawn Stellenbosch in a cup competition, it’s always an exciting game,” said Petersen.

“We know that especially in Cape Town, we have supporters coming out to back us. We’ve done well in the past in Cape Town.

“I think with us being the defending champions, it’s important to defend our title well. The main objective for us is to bring the title back home and keep it in Naturena.”
