Truter suggests two big names to replace Broos

Posted on January 11, 2026

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has lost a growing list of supporters, the latest being Brandon Truter.

Following South Africa’s AFCON last-16 exit at the hands of Cameroon, coach Broos has been hammered for an overly defensive style of play and overall inflexible problem-solving.

BRANDON TRUTER CALLS FOR NEW COACHES AT BAFANA BAFANA

Former Moroka Swallows, Richards Bay and Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has added his voice to the Broos debate.

The Cape Town-born tactician has questioned whether head coach Broos is the right man to take the team forward into June’s global showpiece.

While Broos has been widely praised for creating harmony within the squad, Truter feels that alone may not be enough at a World Cup.

Truter believes the World Cup, with its intensity and pressure, could amplify Broos’ shortcomings. “How old is he now? We still have Pitso (Mosimane), Rulani (Mokwena) out there who can really lead this team,” Truter said to Soccer Laduma. “Pitso has grown so much, he has shown his mettle and has travelled the continent, the world.”

“And Rulani keeps on showing that he is one of the best. At the World Cup (with Broos), I think we will be found wanting; at the AFCON, we were exposed.

“I think some serious thought process is needed to really analyse internally. Because of the AFCON in the last 16, now you’re asking yourself, ‘Are we getting out of the World Cup group? The World Cup is a bigger stage,” Truter added.

A SOUTH AFRICAN TO LEAD MZANSI

He concluded by saying he would like to see a local coach given a chance with Bafana Bafana at the World Cup, arguing that South African coaches are often downplayed and not afforded the benefit of the doubt.

Truter pointed to the dominance of the country’s big three: Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, noting that over the past decade, local coaches have won the league in eight out of ten seasons.
