Chiefs Khumalo compares himself to two Pirates players

Posted on January 11, 2026

The former Kaizer Chiefs superstar, most famous for lifting the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Bafana Bafana, is still regarded as a rare talent.

While South Africa and Amakhosi are still hunting to reclaim the glory days of Khumalo’s generation, the former maestro has seen himself in two Buccaneers.

RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG AND RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG REMIND KAIZER CHIEFS LEGEND OF HIMSELF

Chatting on the AfricaFiveAside Podcast, the Soweto-born legend was asked if any modern local players mirror his game.

“Yeah, there are two players Mbule and Mofokeng,” Khumalo told AfricaFiveSide, as quoted by iDiski Times. “A Mofokeng that played against Cameroon, I thought he should’ve been protected like I use to play and be given ample time to be himself, don’t restrict, don’t direct.

“The remote control lose it just let him play the game, give him the space and Mbule very clever player because Mofokeng obvious the physic he is very tiny but Mbule very strong boy.

“I think maybe he was the answer into the Cameroon game,” the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder added.

BAFANA BAFANA AFCON 2025 RUN

South Africa’s campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco, ended in the Round of 16 following a 2-1 defeat to Cameroon.

Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana laboured out of Group B, finishing in second place after two wins: a 2-1 triumph over Angola and a 3-2 victory over neighbours Zimbabwe.

Egypt delivered the only group stage defeat, a 1-0 loss via a controversial Mohamed Salah penalty. Having taken the bronze medal at AFCON 2023 in the Ivory Coast, South Africa’s appearance in Morocco was a massive disappointment.

Moving ahead, Bafana Bafana will be preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with an opening game against hosts Mexico on 11 June.
