Mamelodi Sundowns sign R57 million striker

Posted on January 3, 2026

Mamelodi Sundowns have just shaken the Premier Soccer League’s January transfer window.

The champions have reportedly completed the signing of Colombian striker Brayan León from Independiente Medellín in a deal worth $3.5m [R57 million].

The move was announced by the world-renowned transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

“After fullback Juan Arizala was sold to Udinese as revealed last week, Independiente Medellin is preparing one more sale,” the Italian reporter said on X.

“Brayan Leon leaves the club to join Mamelodi Sundowns for $3.5m package plus sell-on clause,” Romano added.

Born on 19 October 2000, León made his professional breakthrough at Deportivo Pereira in 2021. He announced himself properly in the 2022 Torneo Finalización, scoring eight goals in 15 matches as Pereira lifted the title.

That form earned him a move to Atlético Junior in early 2023, although his stay there was short-lived.

He moved to Independiente Medellín in mid-2023 to deliver goals in both domestic competition and the Copa Sudamericana.

In 2025 alone, León registered an impressive 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions.

REASONS FOR THE SIGNING

Leon’s arrival seems to be a direct solution to Sundowns’ current striker situation.

Club legend Peter Shalulile has seen limited minutes in the first half of the season. Record signing Arthur Sales (R63 million in July 2024) has largely been used out wide or in a number 10 role under coach Miguel Cardoso.

Similarly, Iqraam Rayners, signed as a striker from Stellenbosch FC, has often been deployed on the flank.

Lebo Mothiba, who joined as a free agent after leaving Strasbourg, has mainly provided impact off the bench rather than starting regularly.
