Orlando Pirates legend set to join AmaZulu in support coaching role

Posted on January 3, 2026

A former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star looks set to join AmaZulu’s reserve coaching set-up.

Usuthu’s youth setup are undergoing a massive overhaul. Last month, the club confirmed five exits including that of Diski Challenge head coach Mncedisi ‘Dada’ Sibiya.

Now, new reports suggest a legendary South African name is set to join the club.

Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend to join Usuthu

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana legend Thabo Mngomeni looks set to join AmaZulu.

The 56-year-old is expected to join AmaZulu’s Diski Challenge side in an assistant capacity.

Mngomeni was most recently part of the South African U-17 coaching setup. The national Under-17 team qualified for the 2025 World Cup in Qatar. Mngomeni acted as an assistant coach to Vela Khumalo at the tournament.

Now, according to IDiski Times, the Orlando Pirates legend will soon join AmaZulu.

“Former Orlando Pirates Thabo Mngomeni is also set to join AmaZulu FC as an assistant coach in the DDC team,” the publication reported.

Bucs legend to help Usuthu unearth future stars

Thabo Mngomeni has been roped in to help Usuthu with their ‘Project 32’.

The Orlando Pirates legend will play a major role in guiding the club’s reserve players and getting them ready for professional football.

Mngomeni made just under 100 appearances for the Buccaneers during his playing days. He was also a key midfielder for Bafana Bafana in the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

He originally made a name for himself at Cape Town Spurs while enjoying successful stints at the likes of Manning Rangers and Bush Bucks.
