Zwane Opens Up On Latest Injury & AFCON Readiness

Posted on November 14, 2025

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane has opened up about his latest injury, saying he was disappointed though he couldn’t wallow in pity for a long time.

Zwane, 36, had been on a long layoff from a thigh injury when he made a return in the league match against Magesi FC in September. He started the game but didn’t finish it as he picked up a fresh injury that he is now recovering from.

Mshishi spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Lorenz Köhler in edition 228 of the newspaper where he explained what happened on that day and what went through his mind.

“You know, when you come back from injury, obviously, that excitement to come back, you obviously want to contribute to the team,” Zwane told IDiski Times.

“You want to push yourself. You want to push yourself until you maintain your standard. After that injury, I tried to stretch, but I pulled my quad, and I was so disappointed. And in my mind, I was like, ‘Eish, there we go again’.

“I need to start afresh with the rehab and so on. I was so disappointed, but maybe after two days, I told myself that it happened. I can’t change it. I need to do the process of recovering, and just be strong. And thanks to the guys in the team, they support me all the time. So, ja.”

Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has spoken about Zwane’s recovery process while Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has expressed his doubts about the midfielder making the 2025 AFCON squad. Zwane says mentally he is excited about the possibility of being fit to travel to Morocco later this year.

“No I think overall it’s excitement, knowing for sure that if I can be 100% fit and I can contribute for my club, then I can contribute for the national team,” he added.

“So for me, it’s just to be positive and believe that from now on, I need to push myself, do more strengthening, extra training, so that I can be 100%.”
