Zungu On AmaZulu Trophy Ambitions

Posted on September 30, 2025

AmaZulu midfielder Bongani Zungu has spoken about the club’s ambitions to finally win a trophy having not lifted silverware since 1992.

The 1992 Coca Cola Cup remains Usuthu’s last major trophy. Since then, they have reached two major finals but fell short. They were defeated by Bidvest Wits in the 2010 Nedbank Cup final and lost to Orlando Pirates in the 2022 MTN8 final.

Zungu believes that the current youthful AmaZulu squad, guided by coach Arthur Zwane, possesses the hunger to succeed in all competitions this season.

“I think it’s the hunger [that’s needed], this season they brought in young players with a lot of hunger to succeed,” said Zungu during the launch of Carling Knockout Cup on Monday.

“That has been evident in the league cause we have been doing pretty much well and it’s exciting times for the club.

“Competitions like this are a chance for the club to grab some silverware. We are excited about the season, and we will continue to give every team we play against problems cause we have proven this season that we can play against anyone.

“We create chances which was the problem, but the guys are improving upfront, and the team is gelling very well.

“We’re looking forward to play well and try our best to have a great season.”

The KZN side is setting its sights on the upcoming Carling Knockout Cup to break its long trophy drought. Their campaign starts with a quarterfinal matchup against champions Magesi FC with the date yet to be revealed.
