‘You can’t applaud mediocrity’ – Former coach blasts Kaizer Chiefs
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has criticised his former club despite their recent back-to-back victories.

Amakhosi edged Golden Arrows 1–0 in a midweek DStv Premiership encounter before securing another 1–0 win away to Zesco United in Zambia on Sunday in the CAF Confederation Cup.

An early goal was enough to earn Chiefs maximum points, but Khan remains unconvinced by their performances.

Speaking on Soccer Beat, Khan questioned Kaizer Chiefs’ style of play, describing it as uninspiring.

“Chiefs can’t afford to play football that’s just based on results,” Khan said. “They need to play a brand of football that we can marvel at — a brand of football that tomorrow morning the guys in the taxis and trains are talking about, marvelling at Ace Ntsoeleng turning it on.”

The former Amakhosi coach believes supporters expect entertaining football alongside positive results from the Soweto giants.

“For me, as a fan watching Chiefs, I want to see more. I want to see something that inspires me,” he added.

“It’s how you win sometimes that matters, especially when you look ahead to your next opponents. You want consistency and continuity, and that’s what’s missing at the moment.”

Kaizer Chiefs earn first CAF Confed group win

Khan also felt Chiefs could have performed better against Zesco United, even comparing the Zambian side to teams in South Africa’s Motsepe Foundation Championship.

“You can’t applaud mediocrity. This is Kaizer Chiefs we’re talking about,” he said. “When you look at the opponents they played today, they are not even better than some of our Motsepe League teams. I promise you, any team in the Motsepe League can go pound-for-pound with them.”

He further argued that the Kaizer Chiefs’ recent goals resulted from defensive lapses by their opponents.

“In the two games, Chiefs capitalised on poor defending,” Khan said.

“Against Arrows, there was an offside goal the referee didn’t see, and today we saw poor marking inside the box.”
