‘Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me regarding my son’ – Amakhosi legend

Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mayo has revealed that his former club reached out to him about the possibility of his son, Khanyiso Mayo, joining the team.

The 26-year-old forward was heavily linked to Amakhosi last season, but the Algerian side CR Belouizdad managed to secure the signing of the Bafana Bafana striker.

In an exclusive interview with Kick-Off, Mayo Sr. shared that he had a conversation with Kaizer Chiefs regarding his son.

“Yes, Kaizer Chiefs called me last week to find out if I would give Khanyisa my blessing to join the club,” said the former Bucks Bucks star.

“It is Khanyisa who will decide whether he wants to join them.

“I told Chiefs I would be happy to see Khanyisa at the club because that would be a historic moment. He would be following in his father’s footsteps, and that would make me a proud father.

Kaizer Chiefs were close to signing Mayo in 2024

“But I did make it clear to Chiefs that if they are genuinely interested, they should speak to his current club and buy him, as his contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 season,” he said.

Mayo said if Amakhosi succeeded in signing Khanyiso, he should be given the number 21 jersey.

Kaizer Chiefs still pushing for Mayo

“I told Chiefs that they should assign him my jersey number 21 when he arrives at the club, not jersey number 10.

“They informed me they would get back to me with an update, so I’m still waiting for a response from Chiefs,” said the former PSL defender/striker.

Chiefs have signed Flavio Silva as the only striker and will no doubt need another forward if they are to compete for top honours.

Should Chiefs push for Mayo?
