Williams – A Soft Penalty

Posted on December 27, 2025

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams feels they were hard done by some decisions in their loss to Egypt.

Bafana lost 1-0 to Pharaoes thanks to Mohamed Salah’s penalty, which was confirmed after VAR review just before the end of the first half. The Pharaohs were also reduced to 10-man after Mohamed Hony was sent off.

But despite being a ma down, Egypt held on to the three points and qualified for the knockout stages.

Towards the end of the game South Africa had a penalty shout after a shot from Teboho Mokoena hit the arm of an Egyptian player but referee waved play on after a lengthy VAR review.

Williams feels the penalty that was given against South Africa was soft penalty and felt they should’ve received their own with the Mokoena incident.

“We’re disappointed, the objective in this game was not to lose, we wanted to win or get a point to secure qualification but it wasn’t to be,” Williams told SuperSportTV.

“We feel bad because lots of decisions were made on the field.

“I think it was a soft penalty and obviously when you look at the other side towards the end we strongly feel that we should’ve gotten our own penalty but you know that’s how football is.

“We take the lessons, we take the good things and we move, continue believing in this team.”

Bafana now need at least a point in their final Group B match against Zimbabwe to also book their spot for the knockouts.
