Will Mbekezeli Mbokazi be available for Pirates this weekend?

Posted on December 3, 2025

Orlando Pirates supporters can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing Mbekezeli Mbokazi will play his final match for the club this weekend.

The 20-year-old was signed by Chicago Fire FC this week and will join the US-based side after the Africa Cup of Nations.

Having made his debut for Pirates earlier this year, Mbokazi instantly became a fan favourite and has been the country’s best defender since. This weekend, the young centre-back will play his last match for the Buccaneers in the Carling Knockout Cup final against Marumo Gallants.

“Following positive discussions between the management of both Clubs, it has been agreed that Mbokazi will remain with Orlando Pirates until the final official fixture of 2025,” iDiski Times wrote.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi leaves Orlando Pirates for Chicago Fire

Mbokazi leaves Pirates after just 10 months with the senior team but a move is seen by many as a positive one, given the exposure, finance and growth.

“Mbokazi will occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position, and his contract will run through 2029, with a Club option for the 2029/30 season. Per Club and MLS Policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed,” Chicago Fire wrote.

Mbokazi has been Pirates’ best defender

“We are excited to welcome Mbekezeli to the Club as we further strengthen our back line,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter.

“In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future.”

Having won the MTN8 title and helped Pirates reach the semi-final of the CAF Champions League, Mbokazi has all the necessary tools to succeed in the US.

Will Mbokazi make it work in the MLS?
