Why Sundowns will retain league title despite Pirates’ push – Ex-Bucs coach

Posted on October 30, 2025

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Roger De Sa feels Mamelodi Sundowns still hold an advantage over their rivals Pirates.

The Buccaneers have closed the gap to Masandawana over the years but have are yet to win a league title in over 13 years. The Brazilians have won the Betway Premiership for eight consecutive years and are favourites to win another title this year.

De Sa admitted that Pirates have pushed Sundowns in the past two seasons but still maintained that the Tshwane giants have enough depth to win another title.

“They [Pirates] have improved a hell of a lot,” De Sa told FARPost.

“They have definitely narrowed the gap between Sundowns and the rest of the teams in South Africa.

“Sundowns were running away. Pirates have put some respectability on the log and on the competition. They have come up with some good performances and are showing good signs that they can compete.”

“They could possibly derail Sundowns, but I still maintain Sundowns will be favourites. They got a hell of a squad. And they continue to build on their squad. They could probably fill two teams in the PSL and finish first and second,” De Sa added.

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns clash for the third time this season on Saturday. The two teams played to a draw with each other in August in the MTN8 two-legged semi-final but it was the Buccaneers who emerged winners after a dramatic penalty shootout.

Their last league meeting saw the Sea Robbers claim a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium but this time around, the two teams clash in Pretoria. The Buccaneers have not won at Loftus since 2018 but will feel confident coming into the match.
