What Pitso’s potential Sundowns return means for Pirates

Posted on January 4, 2026

Pitso Mosimane’s return to Mamelodi Sundowns is reportedly on the cards, according to reports.

The 61-year-old coach was in charge of Masandawana between 2012 and 2020, where he won over 10 trophies with the Tshwane giants. His biggest accomplishment with The Brazilians was winning the CAF Champions League back in 2016.

Mosimane left Downs to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly, adding two more Champions League titles before moving to Saudi Arabia.

Could Pitso return to Sundowns?

SoccerBeat’s Peter du Toit claimed that there were talks to bring Mosimane back to Chloorkop after five years.

“This is going to sound unbelievable, but I’ve heard strong, strong talk from within the club’s camp that Pitso Mosimane will be back at Mamelodi Sundowns sooner than you think. That deal could happen by the time the AFCON ends,” du Toit said earlier this week.

“Pitso could be back at Mamelodi Sundowns. Now, a couple of reasons. Let’s look backwards. If you look at Cardoso, he’s never spent more than two years at any one particular club.

“But if you look at it from a Sundowns point of view, winning the League of Sundowns is not an outstanding achievement. Rulani was unbeaten until the very last game of the season, and he lost his job.”

The former South African footballer said Pitso could even take over from Cardoso if he fails to get Sundowns on track, especially in the CAF Champions League and Betway Premiership.

“Cardoso won the league, but he had already been given a good start by our local guys. So, we don’t see, and from the news I’m receiving, I don’t see Cardoso finishing the season. If he does, I’m pretty certain it is his last season,” added Du Toit.

“But Pitso Mosimane, I’ve been told by sources very, very close to it, sources in the club, that Pitso Mosimane may well be at Mamelodi Sundowns sooner than you think. Now, what I’ve also done is left a message with Pitso Mosimane’s agent, and hopefully I’ll get some kind of feedback from her shortly.”

Pitso returning to Sundowns could spell bad news for Orlando Pirates. The Buccaneers are enjoying a good spell under Abdeslam Ouaddou, having gone 10 matches without defeat in the league and currently top the Betway Premiership.

Mosimane’s return could end Bucs dominance if they are to take the league this season. If Pitso takes over mid-season, he might guide Sundowns to their ninth successive league title.

Currently, the Buccaneers are favourite to win not only this season but to continue another year or two of dominance under Ouaddou.
