What Pirates legend honestly thinks about Sundowns

Posted on February 18, 2026

Orlando Pirates’ unbeaten run of 14 games could extend spectacularly should they beat Mamelodi Sundowns to open a nine-point log lead.

With 13 games left after this evening’s game at the FNB Stadium, victory will move the Buccaneers closer to their first Premier Soccer League title since the 2011/12 season.

Orlando Pirates legend Moeneeb Josephs believes the Buccaneers have nothing to fear ahead of their blockbuster showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated clash, Josephs insisted that the pressure is on the reigning champions, while Pirates remain confident, in form and fully backed by their passionate supporters.

“Now we come to this Sundowns team. We have no fear. We have no fear of this team,” Josephs said on the Soccer Beat podcast.

“This is going to be a big game, but it’s a big game for them. For us, as you can see from the crowds that turn up every weekend, every game is a big game.

THE CROWD FACTOR

The Orlando Pirates legend said their supporters will come out in large numbers to back the team, adding that fans recognise the form the Sea Robbers are in and the quality of football they are playing. Josephs stressed that the Soweto giants are entertaining to watch and that supporters are eager to see them in action.

He added that Sundowns may have won the league for eight consecutive seasons, nearly a decade of dominance, but claimed their football has not been attractive.

Josephs further suggested that Sundowns players are playing with fear. He believes Orlando Pirates are approaching the match as just another opportunity to collect three points. He dismissed suggestions that Sundowns have turned a corner after their recent win, arguing that they were merely motivated to prove a point and that this clash would be a far tougher test.

“They are now coming up against a big contender this weekend, and I want to see what they do,” he continued.

“They’re going to be in an intimidating environment, the black-and-white environment, and they know what’s coming this weekend,” Josephs added.
