Velebayi Receives Historical Shirt Number

New Kaizer Chiefs signing Asanele Velebayi has received the number 17 shirt, previously worn by George Lebese.

Velebayi was unveiled by Amakhosi on Tuesday – a day after being declared a free agent by the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber on Monday.

Chiefs confirmed the 22-year-old signed a long-term contract, without giving further details. Velebayi received the number 17 shirt which was last worn by Edson Castillo, who has left the club even though his departure hasn’t been announced officially.

Before Lebese it was Cole Alexander who wore the number, Kabelo Mahlasela before him and Lebese between 2008/09 and 2016/17.

The left winger won multiple trophies at Naturena, including two league titles in 2012/13 and 2014/15.

Chiefs fans will hope Velebayi can have a similar effect and be part of a new successful period at the club.
