Upington City came out tops in the six-goal thriller against Kruger United while new Motsepe Foundation Championship sides Gomora United, The Bees, and Midlands Wanderers all started their campaign with a win.

The journey to the Betway Premiership started on Friday with two fixtures, Gomora United narrowly beat Leicesterford City 1-0, with a goal scored by Xola Mosiea in the first half. The newcomers managed to keep a clean sheet with the leadership of former Orlando Pirates defender Rooi Mahamutsa.

In the other clash, Siyabonga Dubula’s 35th-minute goal for Highbury FC was cancelled out by Prince Nxumalo’s 60th-minute strike to level matters for Pretoria University as the tie ended 1-1.

On Saturday, it was raining goals at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium after Upington City beat Kruger United 4-2. Mziwokuthula Zimu opened the scoring for Bafana Ba Gucci inside 10 minutes. 15 minutes later, Kruger equalized, but City went ahead once again in the 33rd minute with Zimu completing his brace. Lesedi Motha extended the lead for City, making it 3-1, five minutes before halftime. United reduced the deficit from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 at the break. In the 53rd minute, Bafana Ba Gucci made it 4-2 with Motha completing his brace.

Milford FC overcame Lerumo Lions by 1-0 courtesy of Nqaba Xulu, who scored deep in the second half to seal all three points.

Down in the soaked Mother City, Cape Town City played a goalless draw against Clinton Larsen’s side, Venda Football Club but there was drama in Limpopo as Black Leopards suffered a 3-0 defeat against Casric Stars. Leopards started the game with 10 men after failing to register their players as former South Africa U20 defender Thendo Mukumela played as a goalkeeper.

Sunday was a day of new babies in the league, with The Bees beating season campaigners Baroka FC 2-1 while Midlands Wanderers surprised Hungry Lions by 1-0 at home.
