Orlando Pirates remain top of the Betway Premiership after rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs played to draws on Wednesday.
Masandawana were held to a 1-1 draw at the Petrus Molemela Stadium. Vincent Pule opened the scoring in the 26th minute after a mistake from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The Tshwane giants equalised through Lebo Mothiba with 17 minutes to go, but the Brazilians could not find the winner and had to settle for a draw.
A 1-1 draw sees Sundowns remain second in the Betway Premiership after 12 matches. With 18 matches still to play, Masandawana are two points behind Pirates but will look at Wednesday’s game as a missed opportunity.
Chiefs on the other hand were held to a 0-0 draw by bottom-of-the-table Chippa United. Amakhosi slip to 5th place on the log, while the Chilli Boys remain winless since September.
Pirates remain top of Betway Premiership, Downs fumbles
For now, it’s advantage Pirates after 12 rounds of matches. The Buccaneers have been flawless in recent months and have the best squad in the league. With one trophy already won and another final to play this weekend, the Sea Robbers are now favourites to win the league.
If Sundowns are to win the Betway Premiership for the ninth consecutive season, they need to find form next year and find a balance between the league and CAF Champions League.
Pirates are out of CAF and only have to concentrate on the league and, later, the Nedbank Cup.
