As reported by The South African on Tuesday, Rulani Mokwena was taken into custody by customs officials at Houari Boumediene Airport, Algiers.

It was alleged that he was attempting to depart Algeria with undeclared foreign currency.

SA EMBASSY CONFIRM RULANI MOKWENA IS FREE

“The South African embassy in Algeria has confirmed that coach Rhulani Mokwena is now safely in Libya,” Soccer Beat reported. “That he has opted to proceed to Libya as he looks to pursue new opportunities.”

Last weekend, Rulani Mokwena stepped down from his role at MC Alger, bringing a short chapter to a close. The Soweto-born coach is now set to join Al Ittihad SC as he prepares for a new challenge.

His move comes with a significant contract, placing him among the higher-paid coaches on the continent. He will also reunite with Thembinkosi Lorch, who recently joined Al Ittihad from Wydad Casablanca.

In addition, Sinethemba Badela is expected to be part of his technical team, continuing a working relationship that includes time at Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad.

Al Ittihad currently lead the Libyan Premier League and are unbeaten after 10 matches, with nine wins and one draw. The club recently parted ways with head coach Khaled Ben Yahia ahead of Mokwena’s arrival.

JOINING ANOTHER MEGA CLUB

They remain one of the most successful clubs in Libyan football, with 18 league titles. Founded in 1944, Al Ittihad enjoyed a dominant period in the 2000s, including six consecutive league titles between 2005 and 2010. Their honours also include several domestic cup and super cup victories.

In continental competitions, the club has had notable runs, reaching the latter stages of both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
