Kaizer Chiefs currently have six strikers in their squad, but could release at least two of them at the end of the season.
Currently the club have Ashley Du Preez, Khanyisa Mayo, Flavio Da Silva, Tashreeq Morris, Naledi Hlongwane and Etiosa Ighodaro. Only Mayo, Da Silva and Ighodaro have found the back of the net this season.
Du Preez played a few matches, but the former Stellenbosch FC star failed to impress Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef. Morris, on the other hand, has not kicked a ball this season, while young Hlongwane got promoted to the first team this season.
Which Kaizer Chiefs strikers could make way for Mabasa?
Amakhosi have recently been linked to Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. According to reports, the 29-year-old forward will leave the Soweto giants at the end of the season but could still sign a pre-contract in January.
With ex-Bucs duo of Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako at Kaizer Chiefs, it wouln’t be a surprise if Mabasa joins Amakhosi.
If the move materialise, Amakhosi will have to release Du Preez and Morris. The two strikers will most likely not get be at Naturena beyong next season given the fact that they have not been part of the coaches’ plans for several weeks.
Mayo is currently on loan and if he fails to deliver this season, the Glamour Boys might opt not to extend his stay or sign him altogether.
Given Mabasa’s record in the PSL, Kaizer Chiefs will not miss the opportunity to sign him as a free agent. The talented striker has options and could seek a move to the Middle East.
Former Orlando Pirates attacker Phumlani Mkhize told KickOff that Mabasa could be what Amakhosi needed. He explained why the Bucs forward is different to all Chiefs strikers.
