Former Orlando Pirates midfielder and captain Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi has defended Khanyisa Mayo’s interfering moment in Pule Mmodi’s goal, saying he understands why the former did what he did.
The game was tied at 1-1 when Amakhosi looked like they would take advantage and grab a 2-1 lead just before half-time when Mmodi’s shot was already going in when the new signing tapped it over the line, while he was in an offside position.
The result meant Chiefs are in fifth position on the Betway Premiership table with 15 points from eight encounters.
Tso said it’s a striker’s instinct and he has once done the same thing, though he was on side.
“That’s a difficult moment for him that as a striker you want your name to be there in terms of goal scoring,” said Tso on iDiski TV.
“But unfortunately he didn’t read the whole action around. You know there’s games where you need to hold on because in this game allow that ball to go.
“I mean it’s already there in the line and doesn’t need you to cross the line unless you are saying you can see someone or wind obstructing that’s why you had to put your leg there.
“Unfortunately Mayo is a typical striker that wants to score and I even said to Junior [Khanye] that I too once did something like that as well. Khauleza had hit it and I came and finished it off but the difference was that I was onside.
“I saw Mmodi’s mouth saying ‘tlogela monna why o e tshwere‘ [leave it man why did you touch it]. I think it’s just striker instinct where you want to score then you see the ball going in that direction and you want to touch it and say you scored.
“Mayo just needs to relax and learn that some of the action doesn’t need you to add sugar.”
