Tshegofatso Mabasa just a few goals away from breaking Pirates record

Orlando Pirates top striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set himself a target in the first half of the 2025/26 season.

The 28-year-old attacker scored seven goals in 25 league matches last season and is eager to improve on that tally. Overall, he netted 15 times in 48 appearances across all competitions as he nears Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi’s record of Orlando Pirates’ all-time record goalscorer.

Mabasa is currently on 46 goals for the Buccaneers and needs just seven goals to break Tso’s record.

Mabasa just 7 goals shy of breaking Pirates record

“I’m looking to have a very big season, and I think I’m 10 or 11 goals away, I want to achieve that record before AFCON starts,” Mabasa said when asked by iDiski Times if he has an eye on the record

“It is [possible], in August we already have five games, six with MTN8, so I don’t see why [I can’t break the record].

“I don’t see pressure anymore, it’s about speaking things into existence, speaking things into life. It’s how my mother has raised me, it’s about speaking it to life, and it will happen,” he concluded.

Mabasa played mostly as a backup striker last season, with former Pirates coach Jose Riveiro preferring Evidence Makgopa upfront. With Ouaddou in charge, the former Bloemfontein Celtic striker could fight for his place in the starting eleven.

Will Mabasa get the record this year?
