Top Chiefs boss comments on Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana

Posted on November 26, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs FC welcomed the news that four of their players made Hugo Broos’ preliminary Afcon squad.

Broos has enjoyed a strained relationship with the Glamour Boys. The Belgian tactician hasn’t been shy to call a spade a spade.

And in recent times, the Amakhosi have been at the receiving end of some blunt Broos criticism whenever he’s asked why he prefers not selecting Kaizer Chiefs players for Bafana Bafana.

With Afcon 2025 taking place next month in Morocco, the Glamour Boys will hoping some of their players get the nod this time around.

Kaizer Chiefs boss heaps praise on Broos’ Bafana Bafana

Kaizer Chiefs stars Brandon Petersen, Bradley Cross, Thabiso Monyane and Mduduzi Shabalala have all made Broos’ preliminary squad.

And while it remains to be seen whether any of them will make his final squad, Amakhosi Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jnr believes the Belgian coach is doing a sterling job with the national team.

As much as Motaung Jnr hopes to see a few of his players go to Morocco, he finds no fault with Broos for past selection storms.

“Anybody at any club will want to have as many players as possible in the national team,” Kaizer Motaung Jnr said as quoted by Soccer Laduma.

“We are very proud of the work that Hugo Broos has done for the mere fact that he has had a formula that has worked for him. Qualifying for the AFCON and qualifying for the World Cup is a massive task. he has done a great job.”

What has Broos said about Chiefs in the past?

Broos hasn’t been shy to criticise Kaizer Chiefs in the past. The Bafana Bafana coach has remained consistent in his argument that the Glamour Boys are not at a level where their players can compete for spots in his side.

“For me, for the moment I can’t select players of Kaizer Chiefs. And I hope that they make a better season next year. Ok, they’ve won the Cup, but I think that was the only highlight in Chiefs’ season. All the rest was not so good… the supporters are very happy because they won the Cup, but we have to be honest and I don’t have anything against Chiefs, but I have to be honest in my choices.” Broos said last season.

Now, with Chiefs seemingly doing a lot better, perhaps some of their players will get the nod for Afcon 2025.
