Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler has reacted with no surprise after his players were snubbed in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad.
Broos named his charges to face Lesotho and Nigeria next month in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Vuyo Letlapa and Siphesihle Mkhize left out having been in the preliminary squad.
Tinkler was asked after his side’s 2-0 win over Durban City if he is disappointed to not have any players in the squad and he said not at all because he understands why Broos made the choices he made in his selection.
“No, I’m not surprised because the national team is doing well,” said Tinkler.
“So, if the national team’s doing well, why are you going to chop and change players? So, you’ve got to give those players the opportunity to prove why they are doing well. And if obviously the form goes down, then now you start looking at other players. For me, it’s not a surprise that what they’ve selected are the squad that has done extremely well.”
In as much as the national coach didn’t select anyone from the Limpopo side, he was complimentary towards them saying they are playing the best football in South Africa currently though Tinkler doesn’t necessarily agree with Broos on this.
“Maybe I don’t entirely agree,” added the former Bafana Bafana midfielder.
“Like I said we got to be better on the ball. Sometimes this evening, we give the ball away cheaply we put ourselves under unnecessary pressure.
“So, I still think there’s a lot of room for improvement in terms of how we play.”
