Three Kaizer Chiefs captains without armbands

From the day he donned Kaizer Chiefs’ badge, Inacio Miguel has carried himself with a quiet authority. He’s not just a figurehead, he’s part of a leadership engine that pulls the entire squad forward.

This confidence and aggression have proved vital in lifting morale and performance early this season, with two wins out of two over Stellenbosch FC and Polokwane City.

The 29-year-old Angolan was officially named the new captain after Yusuf Maart left Amakhosi to play his football in Austria for SV Ried.

The former Petro de Luanda star has settled seamlessly into the role, but has been quick to point out that the weight of the captaincy extends far beyond himself. Leadership, he insists, is shared.

According to the Kaizer Chiefs skipper, his teammates Brandan Petersen, Zitha Kwinika, and Reeve Frosler are captains without armbands.

“I always heard people saying that brings a lot of pressure,” Miguel said via iDiski Times.

“I don’t see it as a pressure, I see it as a responsibility, as a privilege, but as the previous one that was sitting here, Beza [Brandon Petersen] for me, it’s the biggest example that you don’t need to have the armband to be the captain.

“And inside of the group, the team that we are creating this season it’s not only me, that has the armband that I’m the captain. We are all captains inside of the group.

“We have the example of Zitha [Kwinika], for example he didn’t play much last season but for me, and I’m honest, I have to be honest with you, same for me Zitha is the captain of this team.

“Beza also is the captain of this team. Reeve Frosler also is a captain of our team. So of course, I have the armband.

“I have to give the face. I will take the responsibility, as you said, not embracing pressure, I’m just being the image of Kaizer Chiefs captain in and off the pitch with a lot of responsibility. But also a lot of pride and the joy, because it’s all about that it’s a privilege to be a Kaizer Chiefs captain,” concluded Miguel.
