Themba Zwane’s return to Bafana after World Cup qualification

Posted on October 15, 2025

Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane has shared his joy after the national team officially qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 36-year-old veteran has endured a tough spell with injuries, missing much of last season. After returning to action earlier this campaign, Mshishi suffered a thigh injury in August during the MTN8 semi-final against Orlando Pirates.

Although he briefly made a comeback a few weeks later, his return was short-lived. Fortunately, the injury is not believed to be serious, and Zwane is expected to be back in action next month.

Zwane has not featured for Bafana Bafana since suffering an Achilles injury last year. With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) just two months away, the Sundowns star is racing against time to regain full fitness and make Hugo Broos’ final squad.

‘It’s happiness overall. It’s always good to see the country so happy. The boys did their job very well and we are so happy as a country,” said Zwane on SuperSport TV.

“The message to South Africans is that the guys are doing well, obviously we want to see them happy, and we will do our best as a team and make sure that we make them happy all the time.”

With Mamelodi Sundowns playing in multiple competitions, expect Mshishi to get some game time before the AFCON tournament.

Zwane’s addition to the Bafana team will boost their chances as they seek their second AFCON title.

Can Zwane make it in time to feature in the AFCON?
