Orlando Pirates supporters have been double-checking this weekend’s fixtures, believing there might be some type of error.
Only eight clubs will be in action in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals this weekend: AmaZulu, Sekhukhune United, TS Galaxy, Golden Arrows, and Durban City. The list also includes Casric Stars and Milford FC, while Jacksa Spears will represent the third division ABC Motsepe League.
WHY NO BETWAY PREMIERSHIP ACTION?
In South African football, the calendar is often more crowded than many leagues around the world. Alongside the Betway Premiership campaign, clubs also compete in three major domestic knockout competitions: the MTN8, the Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup.
Because of this packed programme, the PSL generally places cup fixtures on weekends to maximise attention and avoid clashes with league matches.
Sponsors also play a major role in the planning, as spreading ties across a weekend ensures their competitions receive full visibility without competing directly with multiple Betway Premiership games for the same audience.
