Talks with Kaizer Chiefs breakdown as coach joins African giants

Posted on October 15, 2025

Kaizer Chiefs were in talks to bring one of their own back to the club to help their coaching unit.

The talks however have broken down, with the Amakhosi club legend sealing a move to Tanzanian giants Young Africans.

The Glamour Boys will now have to return to the drawing board as they map up out a way forward for their technical team.

Currently, Kaizer Chiefs are being led by Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

Mabedi’s return to Kaizer Chiefs called off

Kaizer Chiefs legend Patrick Mabedi was set to return to the Glamour Boys.

The Malawian legend was in talks with the club over a coaching position at the club.

It remains to be seen in what exact capacity Chiefs wanted to bring him in. However, that’s now water under the bridge as Mabedi has already sealed his next move.

The Kaizer Chiefs legend has joined Young Africans in Tanzania to coach alongside Romain Folz.

According to Soccer Laduma, Mabedi was engaged in serious talks with Chiefs before concluding a deal with Yanga.

“Recently there have been talks between the club’s hierarchy and the former assistant coach (Patrick Mabedi). It’s still very early to say in what capacity they would want to have him at the club right now,” the publication reported earlier this week.

“Whatever is going on, it is looking promising, and there will be something mentioned soon as both parties have been talking. So let’s wait and see for now. But it’s apparently believed to be in the coaching department.”

Amakhosi’s next fixture

Next up for the Glamour Boys in the CAF Confederation Cup is a tricky second round preliminary clash against DR Congo’s FC Simba.

Kaizer Chiefs travel to Lubumbashi to face their opponents on Saturday, 18 October.
